Philadelphia to Prohibit Asking Job Applicants About Their Prior Wage History 1/27/2017

The City of Philadelphia amended its Fair Practices Ordinance (Ordinance) on January 23, 2017, to prohibit employers from inquiring about an applicant’s wage history during the hiring process. The law is the first of its kind adopted by a city in the United States and takes effect on May 23, 2017.

EEOC Increases Penalty for Violating Notice Posting Requirements by 150 Percent 6/30/2016

The EEOC is increasing the penalty for failure to post the required workplace notices under Title VII, the ADA, and GINA by 150 percent. This increase means the maximum penalty for notice violations will increase to $525 per violation effective July 5, 2016.

New York Enacts Paid Family Leave Law and Increases Minimum Wage Rate 4/8/2016

The Dawn Of A New Wild, Wild West In Mississippi? State Supreme Court Rules On Employees Workplace Firearm Rights 3/30/2016

On March 24, 2016, the Mississippi Supreme Court issued an opinion that allowed an employee to proceed with a wrongful discharge lawsuit after being terminated for possessing a gun on company premises, significantly altering employers’ ability to forbid the presence of firearms at the workplace.

The Penalty For Reimbursing an Employee for Individual Healthcare Coverage 4/24/2015

Health care arrangements set up under a section 105 reimbursement plan can’t reimburse health insurance premiums for private plans purchased by the employee. Employers who reimburse employees for individual non-group health plans face a $100 a day or $36,500 per year, per employee excise tax.
